I am quite ill as I type this, so please excuse any lack of enthusiasm tonight. Tonight is Latin night with the Samba and the Rhumba. When they first panned to Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris, my hubby said, “dud, push her over the balcony!.” Hee Hee. First impressions are that Karina Smirnoff looks like a giant banana. It must be primary colors week for the costume designers. Up first is Mario and Chiquita Banana. Mario gets a confidence boost by going to a radio show with Stevie Wonder. These shows are getting bigger and bigger stars all of the time. Mario compared himself to Stevie, and I don’t really see the connection. They are dancing the Samba and it is much smoother than we have seen in the past from Mario. Karina Smirnoff’s dress is almost censor worthy, yikes. The dance was fluid, but maybe a little bit safe? Len said it was his best dance so far but he should work on his foot action. Bruno also liked it as did Carrie, both calling it classic. I think they are trying to spray tan Karina until she looks like Mario’s twin. Three 9’s for a total of 27.
Up second are Priscilla Presley and Louis Van Amstel trying to come back from their bottom two performance last week. They are doing the Rhumba. They come out slow and romantic. There are some slick balancing moves, but overall I thought it was pretty boring. I spent the whole dance waiting for them to start dancing. Bruno thought he could see to many flaws with the dance being so slow, Carrie agreed. Len said he was disappointed, then the judges started arguing, which is always fun to watch. Did Tom just say Def Leppard was going to be on?? Be still my early 90’s heart! Three 7’s for a total of 21, not great but it could have been a lot worse.
Coming in third are Marissa Jaret Winokur and Tony Dovolani. My guess is her Samba will be horrible. So there is a ton of shaking in this Samaba, but not really much else. It seems like there is something awkward about her foot work, like she is stomping when she steps, it is very odd. Hated it. Standing ovation though, maybe I am wrong?? Carrie says her head is spinning and it was Marissa’s best dance by far. Len liked the choreography. Bruno said the has more shakes than a cocktail bar. Three 8’s for a total of 24, I get the feeling they were expecting more.
Fourth couple are Cristian de la Fuente and Cheryl Burke. This week should be easy for him, they are doing the Rhumba. During rehearsals Cheryl calls him feminine. It is funny. Then they do some dumb movie schtick, it is not funny. Lots of slow music this week, it makes it hard for me to stay awake. Yes, this is very romantic and sensual, but I am bored. Len called it a competent performance, not fantastic or gruesome to watch. Bruno said they had great chemistry, that it was a good performance but there was a problem with the walks. Carrie thought tonight the chemistry was missing and it was not super erotic as she was expecting. Two 8’s and a 7 from Carrie for a total of 23.
Dancing fifth are Marlee Matlin and Fabian Sanchez. Marlee and Fabian went to Mexico to fit children with hearing aides, it was pretty amazing. They are doing the Samba, Fabian says this one is challenging because she can’t miss a beat. Marlee is amazing as always. This is really fast and for the most part she is staying on the beat perfectly. The choreography is some of the most fun we have seen so far tonight. Bruno said that a lot of the time she was off the beat but when she was on it was really great. Carrie also noted her stumbles, but liked that she kept going. Len went with the great for being deaf bit. I bet these scores will not be very high. Two 7’s and an 8 from Bruno for a 22.
Looking lovely in lavendar (say that 5 times fast) are Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas. They are dancing the Rhumba and it starts out lovely and elegant. Mark pulls Kristi’s hair clip out which is quite sultry. This dance is perfect, it is like watching two professionals dance. Carrie thought it was very emotional and great. Len called it fabulous. Bruno said she was Kristi Yam-licious and stupendous. They’ll get some more ten’s out of this one. Two 10’s and a 9 from stingy Carrie Ann Inaba.
The next performers are Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough, who was taken to the hospital for food poisoning earlier today. I’m telling you someone broke superstition on this set. They are dancing the Samba and Shannon is worried about looking awkward. Her legs look shiney and weird. Shannon does not look as graceful as she did last week, maybe she is worried that Derek is going to hurl on her. Len thought that it was not good enough, not enough hip action. Bruno said it had no bounce and was maybe too hard for her. Carrie liked that it was ambitious but lacked bounce. Two 8’s and a 7 from Bruno for a 23.
Finally, the last dancers are Jason Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska doing the Rhumba. I think it is funny that Jason is just wearing a sweater and slacks, the other guys must be so jealous. It was lovely. Bruno said Jason had the look of a love god. Carrie said they had insane chemistry, but Jason should be careful of his arms when they are down. Len liked it but is not a big fan of Edyta’s poses, I’m not either. Three 9’s for a total of 27.
This show felt like it was 8 hours long…
