Cheryl Burke Battles Weight Gain Critics

Ms. Burke appeared on fellow ABC morning show today to battle the rumors about her weight gain. I like Cheryl Burke, a lot. But, I too had noticed that she was a bit thicker than she had been last season. I did not notice that there was a real firestorm of people commenting on it and saying she looked pregnant and comparing video from last season to that of this season. I think maybe some people want to think about getting a life.

Cheryl says that she had the summer off and gained five pounds. She claims that she still wears the same size four that she always has and that she is comfortable in her own skin. Diane Sawyer interviewed her via satellite and they talked at length about how this affects young girls body images. They brought up the recent so-called “fat” pictures of Tyra Banks and Jennifer Love Hewitt and how they complained that the media was sending the wrong message to young girls. Cheryl Burke said that all of the commentary had negatively affected her in the beginning of the season, but she had gotten over it now. She also said that although she is not trying to lose weight she is naturally losing it by dancing seven hours a day with her partner Maurice Greene.

ABC milked the drama by showing the split screen of her dancing in a lavender backless dress this season with Maurice and last season with Cristian de la Fuente. Twice. They also managed to get in a clip of Misty May-Treanor’s injury. Can we say predictable?

I agree with most of what Cheryl said, even though I made fun of her too. She should not take it to heart though, I make fun of everyone. However, I take issue with the last things she said on the show. At the end of the interview she said, “you don’t have to be anorexic or a size zero to be beautiful.” I hate when people equate being thin with being anorexic, the two are not mutually inclusive. I’m thin and often wear a size zero, but I am by no means anorexic. Just wanted to get that off my chest.
