Maks stuck his foot in his mouth?

Open Mouth Insert Foot! Apparently Maksim Chmerkovskiy has stuck his foot in his mouth and is slowly pulling it out and actually thinking before he speaks.  If you remember, he said last week that he was moving on from Dancing With the Stars and implied that he had bigger and better projects to work on. Read my blog entitled Maksim Quits Dancing with the Stars? for further details so I don’t have to rehash it.

Anyways, after the dust settled and Maks read the articles about him he had a change of heart.  “When I read the article, I was like, ‘ah… what have I said?’ It was very tear-jerky for me,” he says. “I’m honored to be part of this show, and the most important thing is the promotion of ballroom dance. When I had a free moment, I read all the e-mails and looked at my fan site and people were just devastated, to say the least. I didn’t mean to do that.” 

What really happened in my opinion is that Maks hated coming in 2nd - he was upset and angry at the 2nd place finish - ya know, always being a bridesmaid and never a bride type feeling and he just spoke without thinking out of anger.  He blamed it on fatique and the strain from being away from home for six months.

“Being away from home for so long was taking its toll,” says Maks. “I’m one of those people who get very homesick and needs to recharge the batteries. I’ve missed all the Hanukkah parties and all the dinners. I haven’t seen my family in four months.”

Maks also talks about the fame that the show has brought and how as a ballroom dancer one isn’t used to that type of fame.  “I don’t know how to deal with this,” says Maks. “I never had fans outside of my family. People were tuning in to see what I was going to do next, and that, to me, is mind-boggling. I’m not used to that kind of attention. In our ballroom world, we don’t have fans like that. But a lot of people, when they found out that I was supposedly quitting the show, there was a ridiculous amount of support.” 

Maks talks about having to come up with new choreography every week and trying to learn that within hours (not days) because of Mel B’s hectic Spice Girl schedule. Eventually that can take a toll on anyone. Maks said “It seemed like, at any moment, [the announcer] would say: ‘Here’s the next dance from Maks and Mel’ and we would just walk down the stairs and take the microphone from Tom and say: ‘We apologize, but we don’t have our dance ready.’ That’s what I really thought.”

Maks won’t have to fear or be homesick any longer because after he is finished choreographing a New Year’s Eve Show in Las Vegas he’ll return home to spend the holidays with his family. After the holidays he’ll decide what he wants to do next which could Dancing with the Stars. Notice it said “Could”. Nothing is ever definite with Maks.

So, what about Maks’ future with Dancing with the Stars? Well, I think it has opened a lot of doors for him, but Dancing with the Stars certainly will go on with or without him. I think he knows that and is backtracking. And, it’s ok - you are human, Maks, and are allowed to speak without thinking. People do that everyday. Unfortunately you did that when reporters were present and have to end up taking back what you said on a much grander scale then any of us do. It is what it is - and I’m a betting woman. I think Maks will be back next season and he will be gunning for first place. How far he goes all depends on who the producers pair him up with. You just know that Julianne will be paired up with an old geezer like Wayne Newton - that’s what they did to Cheryl Burke. Maksim has been lucky and has been paired up with some young women who could take him pretty far. So, could an old geezer woman be in store for Maksim too? We’ll see next season.
